City of Vandalia Division of Fire issued the following announcement on January 27.

At 9am this morning the Division of Fire was dispatched to a stream near Poplar Grove and Crestwood Hills Drive on the report of a green substance in the creek. Crews arrived to find several miles of creek and underground storm sewer with green water flowing thru it. Crews assisted by Vandalia Police and Public Works crews tracked the material back to a local business who's large air handling unit (on the exterior of the building in a remote area of the property) froze up expanded and burst a supply line which released a leak detection liquid into the storm system. As leak detection does once in the water the green coloring expanded and made the release look much bigger than it was. the material in the creek has been determined to be non-toxic, non-hazardous. There does not appear to be any plant or animal life affected by the release.

The EPA did respond to the scene, assessed the situation and are working with the company to coordinate a clean-up of the material. If you live in the area of Kenbrook, Crestwood Hills, Poplar Grove, O'Hara Court, or Farrell Road you may see vacuum trucks working to remove the green from these areas where this material pooled up. This may take the rest of daylight time today and it may stretch into tomorrow.

The Division of Fire will be monitoring the clean-up and reporting back to the EPA on the project.
