City of Trotwood issued the following announcement on February 8.
The month of February has been designated black history month in both America and Canada. Although many criticize this due to the shortness of the month, it was chosen as a way to pay homage to two pillars that made extremely positive impact on the black community-Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.
President Lincoln is credited with maintaining the union of our country and emancipating slaves. Frederick Douglass was an abolitionist who fought to end slavery and help many slaves become literate. It is also important to note that Douglass recruited members of the Union Army during the Civil War. The two men shared a disdain for slavery and February as their birth month.
These are the primary reasons we celebrate black history during February. So, please join the City of Trotwood in saluting the accomplishments, advancements, and contributions black citizens have made on our nation and the world. #growingtogether
