University of Akron Baker and Musiime-Kamali to Join Akron Basketball in 2023-24

The University of Akron men's basketball program announced the addition of Darrion Baker and Marvin Musiime-Kamali to the Akron Basketball family. Both student-athletes signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the blue and gold during the 2023-2024 season, sixth-year head coach John Groce announced.

"Darrion and Marvin are great culture fits for Akron. Both young men are great students, great teammates and they love to compete," Groce said. "We are super excited to add two very good people and very good basketball players to our program."

Baker is a 6'8" forward from Chicago, Ill. and enters his senior season at Hillcrest High School. Plagued by COVID and injuries to start his high school career, Baker turned eyes and gained interest due to a breakout AAU season for Team Rose. He elevated his stock and has ascended to be a Top 10 prospect in the 2023 Illinois senior class.

"Darrion is a very skilled forward with great size and versatility," Groce said. "Offensively, he has the ability to play both inside and outside. He is also a very good defender that can guard multiple positions. His size, talent and passion for the game make his upside tremendous."

Musiime-Kamali is a 6'6" wing from Cushing Academy in Boston, Ma. He earned All-NEPSAC in 2021-22 and is one of four players from the squad coached by head coach James Cormier to play Division I basketball next fall. The Penguins posted 20 wins in one of the best prep leagues in the country and advanced to the NEPSAC semifinals before falling to Worcester Academy. He played for Middlesex Magic on the AAU circuit and they compiled a 34-4 overall record. Prior to Cushing, Musiime-Kamali earned honorable mention All-Independent School League accolades at Thayer Academy.

"Marvin plays with an extremely high level of toughness and motor," Groce said. "His positional size and athleticism allow him to impact the game both defensively and offensively in multiple ways. His elite athleticism, work capacity, high care factor and attention to detail make his ceiling very high."
